Friday Night Fireworks

The Town of Danville will be having its annual Fourth of July Fireworks Display at the far north end of the fairgrounds on Friday, July 4, at dusk (between 9:30 and 10 pm.)

The good news is that there will be many food trucks stationed at the north end of the Promenade (the opposite end from the main building) and fireworks to enjoy.

The bad news is that if you or anyone with you are sensitive to fireworks noise you will want to take appropriate steps. While we believe the main building – which will be open – is fairly soundproof, we cannot guarantee what level of noise will be audible.

Please feel free to contact the Event Steward for more information.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SITE ACCESS FRIDAY NIGHT.

The parking lot will be closed to everyone but SCA attendees from about 4 pm until after the fireworks. This is so that fireworks watchers can be directed to the proper parking area at the far north end of the Fairgrounds. There will be local police officers at the entrances to the parking lot. They will be instructed to let anyone attending the SCA event into the parking lot. The best way to make this smooth will be to print a sign that says SCA and stick it in your windshield so that it can be seen. For those who are on site and want to leave to go for dinner, we will have some of these printed at gate to make it easier to return. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We hope this will not affect your ability to attend and enjoy Simple Days at the Fair.

A note on the weather from the Event Steward

Greetings to the populace of the mighty Midrealm from the staff of Simple Days at the Faire, located deep in the middle of the Middle – you know, that annoying spot where the sweat droplet forms and you can\’t reach it or get it to wick into the linen shirt… ahem.

Due to projected heat indices for the coming weekend, almost all activities at Simple Day will be moved indoors – this includes merchants and booths, lunch tavern, day camps, tournaments for armored and rapier, and so forth. Some activities will still be set up outdoors for access in the mornings when the heat has not yet come upon us – the full archery range, melee practice space for armored and rapier, and thrown weapons. These spaces will be closed at around noon or when the heat index reaches 100 degrees (to give time to clear out before the SCA mandated martial activity shutdown index of 103 degrees.) They may re-open in the evening based on the heat index and the discretion of the Marshals-in-Charge – we hope that the weather will cool enough for our torchlight tourneys, for instance.

Camping is still open, and we urge campers to take all precautions necessary against the heat. If this weather is, indeed, your personal cup of tea, feel free to set up your day camp outside (we even have a covered building available if you want space there.)

We look forward to hosting you at our event and hope that this will help keep you all comfortable and safe so that you have a great experience at the Faire!

It\’s a parish faire, with all the revelry, entertainment, comaraderie, feasting, boasting, fighting, gaming, and even sleeping that goes along with it – all with a nod to St. Phillip Neri, the patron saint of…shenanigans!

Enjoy booths presenting elements of Medieval village fairs, armored and rapier lists, ranged activities, crafter displays, and more!

Merchant and Faire Booth Information

We invite all Baronies, shires, cantons, guilds, merchants, and performers to present a booth along the Promenade of the fairgrounds for the enjoyment of the Faire attendees.

Booth subjects may include merchant space, exhibits, games, performances, craft and artisan demonstrations, or anything else that would add to the atmosphere of a late-period medieval faire. Booths will be intermingled along the Promenade to provide a fair-going experience. SCA groups may use their space for fundraising activities according to the rules of the SCA.

There is no charge for booth space (including merchant space,) but if someone will be camping in or by the booth we will need to charge the site camping fee.

Booths must provide their own tables, chairs, and sunshades. There will be a common Tavern space and a space set up as a Craftpersons Green for individual crafters who do not want to create their own booth.

In case of inclement weather, booth space will be provided under cover in Fairgrounds space.

Thrown Weapons Tournament

Thrown Weapons Rummy

At Simple Day, we’re trying a new tournament: Thrown Weapons Rummy. We’re going to use the sets and runs for the competition. Scoring is going to be simplified somewhat. The tournament will run both Friday and Saturday, with the winner announced Saturday.

The goal is to make sets or runs and score as high of points as possible. However, all cards hit will count towards a score (the sets and runs add more on top of card scores).

Sets – 3 or 4 of a kind (e.g., 3 sixes or 4 jacks)

Runs – at least three consecutive cards in a suit (e.g., J-Q-K clubs or A-2-3-4 diamonds)

Joker cards can be used to replace cards in both runs and sets.

You may try as many times as you want; your highest score will be your final score.

Scoring:

Sets = 15 points

Runs = 25 points

Joker = 20 points

Ace cards, 10-cards, and Court cards (jack, queen, king) = 10 points

Number cards = 5 points (it makes the math easier)

Here are the rules:

— Three rounds of three weapons (axe and/or knife) for a total of nine weapons thrown for each attempt.

— Mark down what cards you hit and arrange them into sets and runs (you choose where you want to use Joker cards).

— Add up the score and record it with the line Marshal.

— Highest score of the two days wins.

Youth Activities

Archery

Youth Shoot: Outside of the main building, past the Courtyard, an archery area will be available for those under 48” tall with a stuffed target. Loaner bows of 10# or less draw will be made available. Prizes of stuffed animals will be given. Range will be open any time we have a marshal available to staff the booth and while the prizes last.
o Friday, 10:30 – 12:00 noon. Rose sponsored Youth Archery shoot entitled, “Shoot Fish in a Barrel.” This is hosted by Her Excellency, Countess Jalida.

Thrown Weapons

Youth are encouraged to try their hand at some of the thrown weapons on the range. Youth ages 8-13 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Youth 14-17 must be signed in by a parent or guardian and sign a minor participation form (for non-parent guardians, a signed youth waiver must be on file). See Forrester Brigitta von Metten at the range.

Kids in the Kitchen

Parent or responsible adult must accompany the participant at all times. Check in with THL Líadan Liathán for assignments. Bon appetite!

Board Games hosted by Kraken!

Feast

With the wedding of the Barony of Sternfeld’s Senechal, Sargeant Frostulf Thorgnyson to the  Pani Jadwiga Kochanova taking place on Friday evening of Simple Day, the theme of our Simple Day feast on Saturday is all about Love.  Passion burns hot but, as Simple Day is traditionally held on the hottest day of the year, all of the foods have been selected for their light and cool flavors and temperatures.

Dishes with wine sauces will be presented with sauce on the side. Ten vegetarian and and ten gluten-free portions (either versions or alternatives) are offered for reservation. Our goal is to provide a safe and healthy feast for all, but the event kitchen is frequently used to create meals with allergy-triggering ingredients such as gluten, nuts, and dairy.

Volunteers who sign up to assist in the kitchen with clean-up or serving receive free feast.

Appetizers: The Newlyweds Enjoy First Bites

The tables will be set with a course of Lady Gerda Ingolsdottir’s plaited heart-shaped challah (gluten-free option unplaited ) with two flavored butters, olive tapas and carrot sticks, and a trio of period mustards. Accompanying is a  fresh charcuterie plate created by Abbess Waldetrudis von Metten of grapes, dried apricots, dates/figs, unsalted almonds, Cotto and Toscaro salamis, goat cheese and fig spread, smoked Gouda cheese, herbed cheese, pita crackers, and hard-boiled eggs.

Seconds: The Loving Cup

Along with our traditional toasts to Crown and Barony, we’ll raise our glasses to offer cheers to the newlyweds with iced tea and lemonade. The second course includes slices of hand-raised and chilled pork pies (gluten-free option), cheese and spinach tart (gluten-free option), lamb stew or vegetable pottage, a selection of mixed pickles, and peas with scallions and mint.

Thirds: And a Dance!

Before tucking in to the Third Course, enjoy a dance (taught and led by THL Colette the Seamstress in class earlier in the day).  The third course includes chicken OR eggplant with rice and almonds, buttered parsnips and carrots, puree of young fava beans with apple. Sweetening the course are wardonys (pears) with sweet red wine syrup on the side (alcohol-free pomegranate sauce option).

Dessert!

The final dish in our celebration of love is St. Bartholomew’s honey and almond cake (gluten-free option) drizzled in a spiced honey and mead syrup on the side (made with Captain Dyderich Wulfhart’s delicious, sweet mead) and topped with Şef Wulfwen atte Belle’s marzipane hedgehogs.
